A bit about the album

Midnight Rain

Midnight Rain is R.T.’s debut album.

Recording: Midnight Rain was recorded at Downbeat Studio in Chicago, IL in Fall 2014 over two days; engineered/mixed/mastered by Michael Govaere.

Genesis: I had a bad breakup. Like a really bad, 9 1/2 year breakup. So I read one of those stupid self-help books (that was actually quite amazing) and it said I needed to see the positive side of me; to treat myself right.

So I started Monday date night with myself. It sounds terribly corny, but I would ride my bike downtown, go ice skating at Millennium Park, get some bad fast food and then go spend an hour in the piano practice room at the Harold Washington branch of the Chicago Public Library.

It was glorious. I would spend the first 20/30 minutes dicking around, trying things out. I would record everything on my phone and hope it was good enough to remember or come back to the next week. Then I would spend the rest of my hour playing through the songs I liked. A few stuck. I didn’t have dick for lyrics, but I liked the melodies. That’s always been most important to me anyways.

Every piano song on the album came out of my time at the library. Sometimes I would have to wait for a room. Those were my favorite nights. The practice room is right next to the magazine photo archives, alphabetical by subject.

So many good subjects! I doubt anyone has looked at those things in years.

Everyone else in the practice rooms was so good. And hardly anyone was playing their own music: lots of affirmed genius going down. I always wondered if I was annoying the other rooms when I played/sang. So I used to sing quietly. Except one night I was really feeling it. No one was around me. I was going to town, as they say. I got done, trance-like as always and as I grab my stuff and leave that hundred degree little room this guy stops me and says, “Man: you got some rhythm!”

I almost hugged him! I never wanted to go back. It felt like every moment would be downhill from there.

A bit about each song

1. Dancing in the fog

Written by: Adam (piano, lyrics) & Josh (bass)
What’s it about: Losing the thing you love most

Adam’s favorite part: Josh’s crunk ending, where he is dismantling his bass with every beast thrust
Should you dance in the fog?: Not if you want someone to see you

Lyrics

Everybody’s searching
Feeling out of touch
Reaching out for one thing they love so much
I have been no different
A man without a cause
There’s always someone dancing out in the fog

As I fall as I knew I would
I’ll tear it down in your room
As I fall doing what I could
I’ll tear it down in your room

Everybody’s searching
Feeling out of touch
There’s always someone dancing out in the fog

As I fall as I knew I would
I’ll tear it down in your room
As I fall doing what I could
I’ll tear it down in your room
As I fall as I knew I would
I’ll tear it down in your room

[bridge]

As I fall as I knew I would
I’ll tear it down in your room
As I fall doing what I could
I’ll tear it down in your room
As I fall as I knew I would
I’ll tear it down in your room

[bridge]

2. Bring out the dead

Written by: Adam (piano, gibberish) & Josh (bass)
What’s it about: Roller derby

Roller derby?: Yep: it’s about a roller derby tournament, where they’re calling out all the teams at the beginning (do they even do that??). The Dead is one of the teams: a ragtag bunch of ragamuffins; rags for jerseys; a ragtime piano player as their coach; rags-to-riches the furthest thing from their dreams; ragged from a string of losses. Okay, none of that really, but the ragtime piano player coach sounds rad!

3. I was so fond

Written by: Adam (piano, lyrics) & Josh (bass)
What’s it about: When you’re used to a relationship and then you get out of one, you’ll do pretty much anything to get back in

Lyrics

I was so fond
Of falling in love
That I didn’t care who it was
They’d say hello
I’d say enough

Is it funny?
Is it falling down on me?
It’s so funny

I was so fond
Of falling in love
That I didn’t care who it was
They’d say hello
I’d say enough
What are you doing for the next 30 years?

Is it funny?
Is it falling down on me?
It’s so funny

4. Midnight rain

Written by: Adam (piano, lyrics) & Josh (bass)
What’s it about: Being stupidly hopeless and thinking it’ll never get better + gross shots

12:15 rain?: Sequel!
Daring it all: I didn’t have lyrics to this chorus forever: like 20 minutes before I had to go sing them. I’m glad I got something down: I was panicking!

I’ve recorded many the song with la’s for the whole chorus. I send one to my parents and my mom calls me out on it! I mean: in the sweetest way possible. My mom is so nice. She’s like, Adam: that song would actually be good if you had any lyrics. I think about that anytime I try to get away with too many la’s – my mom’s not gonna like it!

Lyrics

There’s a time to laugh and a time to cry
A time to fall and a time to get by
If with every breath I can savor life
Then these lonely, lonely days will day

I called every friend that I ever got
I called every favor I took every gross shot
I don’t have love but I got a lot
Like these lonely, lonely days of rot

Tears never fall in the midnight rain
Daring it all with the love I gave
Watching you call someone else by name
Our love fades away

There’s a time to laugh and a time to cry
A time to fall and a time to get by
If with every breath I can savor life
Then these lonely, lonely days will day

Tears never fall in the midnight rain
Daring it all with the love I gave
Watching you call someone else by name
Our love fades away

5. Wake up

Written by: Adam (piano, lyrics) & Josh (bass)
What’s it about: A seance gone bad

Seance singing/screams by: Crystal
Adam’s favorite part
: The descending bass line where the instrumental section starts
Video idea: Straight up Celine Dion running down the halls, slow-motion

Story: So, the guy’s wife dies. He’s torn up. He decides to have a seance so he can see her again. She comforts him. It’s the only sensible thing he can think to do. Except some things are better left alone. He makes contact with his wife, only she’s destroyed by his gesture. God is going to punish her for coming back. And he does. She gets sent back in a torrent of screams. The end. Fucking bleak. I was thinking: what would happen if my girlfriend died. I would need to see her. A seance. Ah! Those always go so well.

Lyrics

Well I had a woman
She was my life
Then she left me to be with Christ
She was the sweetest, kindest soul to ever walk on this Earth

Now she’s left me all alone
Terrified down to my bones
I need to see her I need to know
Telling me to wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up

I should have known
Everyone told me
You’d never, you’d never
Leave well enough alone

God has a plan
God has a vengeance
You’ll never, you’ll never
Leave well enough alone

6. Oh, love

Written by: Adam (piano, lyrics)
What’s it about: Wanting to spend the rest of your life with someone

0 for 1: So, I wrote this song for Josh’s first dance at his wedding. Then they didn’t work out. I can’t categorically say that it wasn’t because of this song. I have to say: I put one bit in there that I wanted to change but never could. Instead of singing, ‘I’m going to love you forever,’ I wrote, ‘I want to love you forever’ – who knows if it’s really going to happen! Fucking a. I wrote this in a bleak ass time. It’s funny: Josh was like: we would love if you would write a love song for us: can you do it? Can you muster any feelings of love? Haha love that guy. I wrote this thinking: someone will come along that deserves this song for me. Now it’s 0 for 1.

Lyrics

Oh love
I want to see you all day
I want to see you nightly
I want to see you when I’m dreaming

Oh love
I’ve never been so happy
I think you are so lovely
I never knew that life could be this good

I want to love you forever

Oh love
I want to see you all day
I want to see you nightly
I want to see you when I’m dreaming

Oh love
I’ve never been so happy
I think you are so lovely
I never knew that life could be this good

I want to love you forever

7. All these feelings

Written by: Adam
What’s it about: Still loving someone when you really shouldn’t

The story: I used to be in band with my ex. We sang a lot of duets. Sick lovey-dovey duets: things you want to gouge your eyes out to. Once we broke up I was like: f duets. Never again. Then I wrote this. Josh is a fucking baller on this. It’s so funny: we practiced this song in every practice and he was always so mild-mannered when he sang it. Shy almost. Then we get to our first show and he balls-to-the-walls it. I can’t stop smiling because he’s just so into it. I love it. We have another name for this song: Panty dropper, pussy popper. Hahahahaha. That just ruins it in the best way possible.

Recording: We single-mic’d it. We tried doing the standard isolation, singing into our own mics and then we were like: that’s just not this song. This song is a live song: it needs to go down as it was intended.

Lyrics

Yes well I can see you’re lonely
I can see it oh so well
I can only love you so much
Before my heart begins to swell

Yes well I can see you’re lonely
I can see it oh so clear
I can only love you so much
Just as much as you can bear

[Adam – chorus]
It’s time that I go, it’s time for I don’t know
It’s time to tell you how I’m feeling
It’s time that I go, it’s time for I don’t know
It’s time to tell you what’s in my heart

[Josh – chorus]
I get overwhelmed by all these feelings tearing up my heart

Yes well I can see you’re lonely
I can see it oh so clear
I can only love you so much
Just as much as you can bear

I get overwhelmed by all these feelings tearing up my heart

8. Everyone needs love

Written by: Adam (guitar, lyrics) & Josh (bass)
What’s it about: Thinking about someone all the time + hating that

Lyrics

It’s the love I want to find
Think about you all the time
But I don’t sing about it
And the miles I’d drive
Everyone needs love

Tell them the story
Of taking out my heart
Tell them the story
But don’t leave out the best parts

Tell them the story
Of taking all my songs
Tell them the story
But don’t leave out the best parts

It’s the love I want to find
Think about you all the time
But I don’t sing about it
And the miles I’d drive
Everyone needs love

Tell them the story
Of taking out my soul
Tell them the story
But don’t leave out the best parts

Tell them the story
Of taking out my songs
Tell them the story
But don’t leave out the best parts
